For service businesses, the map pack is where calls come from. Use this checklist to tighten your Google Business Profile, reviews, and location pages.
When someone searches 'emergency plumber' or 'dentist near me', the three businesses in Google's map pack capture the majority of clicks and calls. Getting there isn't luck. It's the result of a handful of fundamentals done consistently well.
Google Business Profile
- Choose the most specific primary category available, then add relevant secondary categories.
- Write a keyword-aware business description that sounds human, not stuffed.
- Add every service with a short description, and keep hours accurate, including holidays.
- Upload fresh, real photos monthly: team, projects, storefront, vehicles.
- Publish a Google post at least weekly with an offer, update, or recent project.
Reviews and reputation
- Ask every happy customer for a review with a direct link, ideally within 24 hours of the job.
- Respond to every review, positive or negative, within two business days.
- Encourage customers to mention the service and location naturally in their review.
- Monitor review velocity; a steady stream beats a burst followed by silence.
Your website
- Create a dedicated page for each location or service area with genuinely local content.
- Embed a map, show your address and phone consistently, and add LocalBusiness schema.
- Make click-to-call obvious on mobile and keep pages loading in under three seconds.
Citations and links
- Fix inconsistent name, address, and phone details across major directories.
- Earn local links from chambers of commerce, sponsorships, suppliers, and local press.
- Track rankings across a map grid, not just from your office, to see true visibility.
None of these steps is complicated on its own. The businesses that win are the ones that keep doing them month after month. If you'd like us to run this checklist against your profile and competitors, book a free audit and we'll show you the biggest gaps.
