AI assistants are becoming the first stop for buying research. Here's how Generative Engine Optimization works and the practical steps to make your brand the answer.

A growing share of your customers never see a traditional list of blue links. They ask an AI assistant which accountant, CRM, or roofing company they should consider, and they get a short, confident answer. If your business isn't part of that answer, you're invisible at the exact moment a buyer is forming a shortlist.

Generative Engine Optimization, or GEO, is the discipline of making your brand easy for AI systems to find, understand, trust, and cite. It builds on good SEO, but it rewards some things that classic SEO treated as optional.

How AI assistants decide who to mention

Most AI search experiences retrieve web pages in real time, then summarize them. The brands that get mentioned tend to share three traits: they are clearly described on their own site, they are mentioned consistently by other credible sources, and their content answers questions directly with specific facts.

  • Clarity: a plain-language description of what you do, who you serve, and where.
  • Corroboration: reviews, directory listings, press mentions, and industry roundups that repeat the same facts.
  • Quotability: definitions, statistics, comparisons, and step-by-step answers an AI can lift into a response.

Five practical GEO steps you can start this month

  • Rewrite your About and service pages so the first paragraph states exactly what you do, for whom, and where.
  • Add FAQ sections that answer the real questions prospects ask on sales calls, in full sentences.
  • Publish at least one piece of original data, such as a benchmark, survey, or pricing guide, that others will reference.
  • Make your business details identical everywhere: Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, and review sites.
  • Use structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQ) so machines can parse your facts without guessing.

Measuring GEO without guesswork

Pick 20–40 prompts your buyers would realistically ask, such as 'best family dentist in [city]' or 'Klaviyo agency for pet brands', and check them monthly across the major assistants. Track how often you're mentioned, how you're described, and which sources are cited. That source list becomes your outreach and content roadmap.

GEO isn't a replacement for SEO. It's what happens when you do SEO with the assumption that a machine, not a person, will read your page first.
